Latin, as a part of Grammar of the Trivium of the liberal arts, is an important aspect of the classical education offered at Light of Christ Academy. As this is the first time with Latin for most students, the upper Academy students learn the beginning concepts of Latin grammar and vocabulary, with an eye toward translating simple thoughts and sentences -- or, for our middle school students, more complex grammatical constructions!
As for the Montessori children, they get very excited about their Latin "lessons". They explore simple, familiar words and phrases ('hello,' 'thank you,' numbers, colors, and more!). They are all eager and curious to discover new names for the things in their world!
Children are exposed as early as 3 years old to speaking Latin through experiences such as labeling common classroom items, singing Latin chants and hymns, and associating Latin terms with numbers, colors, and the days of the week.
