Why are they called Great Books?
These particular books are called “The Great Books”, not because of the subjective decision or opinion of an individual or group; rather, they are called Great because they collectively make up the rich intellectual, cultural, spiritual framework of our Western Civilization. Whether we agree with all of the ideas and authors contained in this canon of literature, it remains true that the ideas and authors that make up these works have been important steps in our collective understanding of God, man, and society. From Euclid to Einstein, from Parmenides to Nietzsche, from Sophocles to Shakespeare, et al., in reading these Great Books, we enter the Great Conversation of our civilization. The minds of the students at Light of Christ Academy will be formed by participating in this conversation - both rejoicing in the great truths and analyzing the major errors.

LCA LibraryThe library at Light of Christ Academy contains books that have been carefully selected to support the understanding of the cultural and historical forces that have influenced the development of human thought, especially Western thought, across time. Books that contain truth, goodness and beauty, are used as a vehicle to learn the history of the Western world, discern virtuous acts, identify how to serve man, and as a means to attain salvation.

Literature and the Church
Literature and the arts are also, in their own way, of great importance to the life of the Church. They strive to make known the proper nature of man, his problems and his experiences in trying to know and perfect both himself and the world. They have much to do with revealing man’s place in history and in the world; with illustrating the miseries and joys, the needs and strengths of man and with foreshadowing a better life for him. Thus they are able to elevate human life, expressed in multifold forms according to various times and regions.
