…they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it. When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots. And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. -Matthew 27:35
When the soldiers wanted to divide Jesus' coat or tunic, they saw it was not a patchwork of pieces sewn together. It was the same quality of clothing, woven from top to bottom in one piece, worn by the high priests in Jerusalem's temple. It was one long vestment that was parted along the breast and back. The act of dividing such a seamless coat would likely make any pieces frayed and useless. The soldiers realized this and decided to cast lots to leave it to time and chance to determine who got the entire garment.
Uniform Policy
Light of Christ Academy enforces a strict uniform policy because that practice has a powerful impact on the formation of a child. Uniform codes work to teach that value and individuality are not external values, dependent on outside ornaments like clothing, jewelry, makeup or tattoos. True individuality is best expressed in the practice of virtue and the strength of one’s character. It works to reduce the temptation to judge others according to outward appearances and creates a sense of equality among those who participate in it.
The explicit requirements of our uniform make an imposing statement of unity and fidelity to the mission to the outside world. It provides a sense of belonging to something special, and a standard of order and beauty. It teaches discipline, responsibility in keeping track and maintaining all of its components. Further, it provides the opportunity to teach personal presentation skills: grooming, hygiene, care for clothing while avoiding excessive vanity.
We are called to be Christ present to the world; to be “Salt and Light”. To do this well requires us to dress for our mission.
